What is Solid Paraffin? Production and Purification Process

Solid Paraffin (Paraffin Wax), with the general molecular formula $C_{n} H_{2 n + 2}$ , is a compound of saturated hydrocarbons. While it was initially obtained from sources like wood tar, today it is predominantly produced as a by-product of the crude oil refining process.

Initial Separation: Oily paraffin (Slack Wax) obtained from crude oil is first melted by heating.
Crystallization and Filtration: Subsequently, through controlled cooling, only the paraffin molecules are crystallized and solidified. At this stage, the oily parts that remain in a liquid state are separated from the solid paraffin.
Advanced Refining: To improve color, remove odor, and increase purity, the resulting paraffin is processed using modern refining techniques. Processes such as treatment with activated clay (Bentonite) or sulfuric acid eliminate the final impurities, yielding a completely white, odorless, and stable product.

Wick Preparation: Secure the wick in the center of the container.
Pouring: Carefully pour the melted paraffin into the container, ensuring the wick remains vertical.
Cooling: Allow the candle to fully harden at room temperature overnight.

Expert Advice: For container candles, no additives are necessary. However, for pillar candles (which are removed from a mold), it is recommended to add approximately 10% stearin to increase hardness, prevent cracking, and improve burn time.
